CITA Prints First Tigrinya Edition of Evangelistic Newspaper
1 August 2025
The Christ Is the Answer (CITA) Ministry has printed its first evangelistic newspaper in the Tigrinya language—20,000 copies—for distribution in Ethiopia.
“Our goal is to bring the Gospel to all nations and tribes. We’ve seen God bear much fruit through the newspaper—many people have come to Christ, believed, and repented. We plan to distribute this Tigrinya edition in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia,” said Taras Sen, Director of the Ministry.
Tigrinya is an Ethio-Semitic language spoken by around 9 million people. Of those, approximately 7 million live in Ethiopia, and the rest in Eritrea.
The first translations of the Holy Scriptures into Tigrinya were made in the 19th century by European missionaries in collaboration with local language experts. Notably, the New Testament was translated in 1866 by Swedish Evangelical Mission missionaries Isak Olsen and Thomas Bäcklund.
The full Bible in Tigrinya was first published in 1895. The main translation was done by Franz Praetorius and Swedish Evangelical Mission missionaries, with the participation of local Orthodox clergy. The printing was carried out by the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS).
CITA publishes its evangelistic newspaper in Ukrainian, four Ethiopian languages—Amharic, Oromo, Gumuz, and Somali—as well as Tok Pisin (Papua New Guinea) and Spanish.
